The SAMOSA Festival is a biennial cultural platform which blends culture, music, poetry, art and drama to convey messages related to the cohesion and integration of Kenyan society in a creative and expansive manner. It showcases the best of Kenyan culture by bringing together elements from Africa, the East and the West through productions and events which depict an intermingling of various traditional and contemporary interpretations of music, movement and art. The SAMOSA ethic is grounded in the core values of integrity, transparency and a deep respect for the sanctity of art.
SAMOSA stands for ‘South Asian Mosaic of Society and the Arts’; the ‘South Asian’ component in the brand originates from the festival being used initially as a mechanism to channel the Kenyan South Asian population’s contribution to civil society in regard to cohesion and integration initiatives.. The launch of the African Festival Network (AFRIFESTNET) took place at the British Council in Accra, Ghana from 19-21 April with 37 festivals from 18 countries in attendance.
The idea for such a network first surfaced at a seminar hosted by the Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF) and Arterial Network in July 2010, with the vision “to build the independent sustainability and to promote African arts festivals as key platforms to nurture, celebrate and project excellent and emerging African artists
nationally, regionally and internationally.''
